Doña Rita’s coffee journey began four generations ago when her family first started producing coffee. Her father, inheriting a small piece of land, expanded their holdings through sacrifice and hard work. Coffee was crucial for the family’s progress, though they initially struggled with traditional mills. In 2019, Doña Rita connected with Bean Voyage, learning to process her own coffee and aiming for fairer prices.

In 2020, Doña Rita processed her first coffee at Finca Pergujal, using a full honey process and sun-drying on raised beds. Conservation is key to her, dedicating part of her land to forest and fauna protection. She cultivated around 180 native tree species, providing habitats for birds like goldfinches and toucans. The farm benefits from volcanic soil near Poás Volcano, enhancing the coffee’s quality.

Doña Rita believes that the volcanic soil, altitude, temperature, rainfall, new coffee varieties, and her family’s dedication contribute to their high-quality coffee.
